The barrel has matured for the most part in tropical Trinidad and in recent years in Scotland.

Founded in 1923 on the site of the old Caroni sugar factory with both column and pot stills, Caroni produced rums that stood out for a distinctive heavy profile which was supplied to the British Navy. Despite protests, it was sold to Angostura by the government of Trinidad in 2001 and then closed in 2002.

But that wasn’t the end of the Caroni Distillery! Fate changed when Luca Gargano learned of a warehouse full of barrels of rum in the dilapidated distillery while visiting Trinidad in 2004. The barrels were bought, bottled and sold and are now frantically sought after by collectors – a phenomenon dubbed ‘Caronimania’.
