Eric Schotman on Chupacabra: what makes this rum a legend?
Born from Port Ellen, bound for greatness: Schotman Single Peated No:1
This release of Schotman Singles Peated Rum No:1 has been a journey steeped in very, very high expectations. From the moment the name Port Ellen Distillery was mentioned, the anticipation felt like a wave washing over me.
Thanks to a friend, Nico, who gave me a box of peat from this revered distillery, all my senses were stimulated and all sorts of associations came up. What would this Single Peated Rum taste like? Would the peat give this rum a recognizable profile?
The answer to that question is now clear: Barrel #11 has already achieved “legendary” status. What a monster of a Single Peated Rum! With the first sip, you taste the sweet character of the rum, with its characteristic tropical fruit notes that immediately pamper your taste buds. But then, like a powerful wave, the peat takes over – and how!
The complexity of this Peated Rum No:1 is unforgettable. Flavors of vanilla, caramel, old leather, tobacco, and hints of spice come to the fore. Then the smokiness wraps around you like a warm blanket. The balance between the sweet fruitiness and the heavy peat creates an experience that simply has to be tasted to fully understand. Any description would do this sensation a disservice.
